Confession No 17: Summer Rocks!

Summer holidays were endless when I was a kid. 8 weeks of making daisy chains on the local school oval, roller skating in my street until dark, barbeques every night, Mr Whippy vans, swimming pools, sandy beaches and no school.

Every year we made the pilgrimage to the south coast of NSW. There we met up with our cousins, family friends and everyone we met last year and the year before. It was just one of those places that everyone returned to again and again. Our group consisted of anywhere between 3-5 families; some would bring caravans but most of us pitched tents. And there we stayed for 2-3 weeks of pure, unadulterated fun.

By day we sat on the beach, swam in the sea, went out in my uncle’s boat, played totem tennis and frisbee. By night we ate barbecues, played with the other kids, had bonfires on the beach and fell into our sleeping bags with sheer exhaustion. We showered in the communal shower block, shook out sleeping bags out every night in case of spiders and got sand in places that I really don’t want to mention but we didn’t care, it was summer and life was good.

That’s the thing about summer isn’t it? It’s lazy and gorgeous and sunny. People seem happier in summer, more relaxed. The days are longer and you get more out of them. Not work but enjoyment: a morning or evening walk, long dinners outside, picnics and beach visits.

And the fruit! The choice of fruit is one of my most favourite things about summer: nectarines, peaches, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, pineapples, melons, plums, mangoes and passionfruit…… I love it straight out of the fruit bowl, in a fruit salad, lacing a trifle, blended into a fruit crush and frozen in a sorbet. Oooohh sorbet. What a lovely way to finish dinner on a hot day or in the afternoon when it’s just too hot to move.

This Passionfruit and Mango Sorbet is one of my faves. It’s sweet and tangy and beautifully bright. It makes the best of fresh fruit and is so easy to make, especially if you have an ice-cream maker. Even if you don’t, have a go because it’s so worth it.

What’s your favourite summer fruit? I can’t decide between pineapple and strawberries….. Oh and then there’s cherries.
