How to Make the Perfect Boiled Egg

I do so love a boiled egg in the morning. Mmmmmmmm, boiled egg with dippers……. And whilst it’s second nature for me to boil up a perfectly cooked goog, I realise that it’s not so for everyone.

I don’t think there is only one way to boil an egg, everyone has their little tips, tricks and quirks. But this works for me.

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Start with room temperature eggs
  2. Take a pin and prick the bottom (the ahem, wider part) with a pin to release any pressure.
  3. Fill a saucepan half full with water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and add the eggs (I usually place the eggs on a spoon and gently lower them in one at a time).
  4. Cook for:
    •    Soft and gooey: simmer for 4 minutes
    •    Softish: simmer for 5 minutes
    •    Hard boiled: simmer for 6-7 minutes. If you want to cool them for a salad or scotch eggs, place the eggs in a bowl of cold water to cool.
*Timings vary according to egg size, but if you use this guide for a large egg (60-70g) you should be fine. If you’ve got smaller eggs, just adjust by half a minute or so.

    Boiled Eggs

Front left – 4 minuters. Back right – 5 minuters. Front right – 6-7 minuters.

  5. If you find that your egg isn’t quite cooked enough, replace the little lid while it’s in the egg cup and let it sit for a couple of minutes. The heat from the egg and egg shell will continue to cook it.

Fun Fact File - Eggcellent…….

  • Buy the freshest eggs you can find and store them in the fridge in their carton.
  • An egg ages 7 times quicker when left on the bench than when it is properly stored in the fridge*
If you do a lot of baking that requires room temperature eggs, keep a small carton in the pantry like I do and take the required amount out the night before.
  • You can tell if an egg is fresh if it sinks to the bottom of a glass of water. If it floats, it’s getting older as the air cell is larger. If it floats to the top, throw it away as it’s getting a bit dodgy.

How do you eat your boiled eggs? I have mine soft (4 minuters) with toast dippers.
