Crumbles, smoothies and fruit compotes

What’s in season for February

Being completely obsessed with food, there’s no surprise that I hang out at fresh produce markets whenever I can. In fact, if I need happying up that’s where I go, even if I don’t need to buy anything. Markets are just so full of life and noise and fresh yummy smells. Coffee in hand, I stroll through row upon row of brightly coloured fruit and vege always coming away feeling happy and rejuvenated.

Some sit in a cafe and people watch, other’s go wandering through vintage furniture warehouses, I go fruit and vegetable ogling. Is that too weird? It sounded perfectly sane and normal in my head but now that I say it out loud, it may just be a little strange…..

Now you may not be weirdly focussed on food like I am and you may not get inspiration from a perfect peach or fragrant fig, but I just know that you want to know what’s in season for February. After all, we’ve only got one more month of summer left and some of that gorgeous produce will soon be leaving us for another year. So let’s make the most of it.

February Fabulousness

Produce that’s heading out of season so indulge now!

Berries – strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries
Stonefruit – nectarines, plums

What do to with them

Cherry-Crumble
Crumbles and pies – Here’s a recipe for my cherry crumble, but change it out for raspberry or strawberry or a combination of all berries.

Spiced Fruit Compote with Honey Ricotta
Fruit compotes – beautiful hot or cold, compotes are perfect for breakfast, dessert or an afternoon snack. Here’s my spiced cherry and plum compote to give you inspiration. I made it with canned fruit as I wrote it in winter, but swap out the canned for fresh and get creative.

spicyfruitsalad
Fresh fruit salads – Is there anything better than a fresh fruit salad? What could be better for breakfast or dessert than a berry salad with a dollop of yogurt or ice-cream? For something a little different, here’s my Spicy Fruit Salad that I make on summer nights for something a little spesh.

Chocolate & Blueberry
Fresh berry smoothies – Mmmmm, smoothies rock! Check out this chocolate and blueberry number (again, I’ve used frozen blueberries for the chill factor and to make it thick, but you can easily get around this by adding some ice or by whacking in a frozen banana)

Where do you like to hang out for inspiration? Is it weird that my place is the fresh food market? Is it too weird? Is it?

Happy eating and have a fantastic weekend
