Confession: I do love a little chocolate in the morning

Mmmmmm, chocolate in the morning…… Why is it that the world frowns upon a bit of chocolate in the morning? I guess you could argue that it’s not all that good for you and should be restricted to special occasions or extreme circumstances (break-ups, bad hair days, Cyclops pimples, vomiting kids during the night and PMT are all good contenders). And normally I would agree, except for today because today we’re talking about my Chocolate Granola. Oh gorgeously fruity, chocolatey, oat-laden heaven; yum, yum and double yum it’s pure comforting heaven.

I admit that I’m partial to a bit of granola and make it quite often, changing out ingredients depending on my mood and what I have in the pantry at the time. When I need a big hit of protein I make my nutty granola which is fantastic for sprinkling over fruit salad with a creamy little dollop of yogurt. At Christmas time I add nutmeg, orange zest, brown sugar and other festive delights. But when I need to treat myself, I make my chocolate granola.

It’s intensely chocolatey which comes from using a good quality cocoa* and has big bursts of flavour from the nuts and dried cranberries and blueberries. I’ve used honey as a sweetener but it’s not overly sweet because I like my sweetness to come from added fresh berries. But if you need a little extra sweetness in the morning, you could definitely bump up the honey. You could also use maple syrup or agave nectar (just use less as it’s sweeter than honey or maple).

There are many different ways to eat granola, but these are my favourites:

  • 1/3 – 1/2 cup with light milk and loads of fresh berries (it doesn’t sound like much but trust me, it’s really filling)
  • Sprinkle a little on a fresh berry fruit salad with a dollop of yogurt
  • Sprinkle over yogurt for an afternoon snack or healthy dessert
  • Grab a handful for a mid-morning snack to tide you over until lunch.

*A note about cocoa: not all cocoa is made equal. I use dutch cocoa because it has a darker colour and I find it gives a better flavour – intensely chocolatey. They have just started selling Dutch cocoa in the baking aisle of the supermarket or you can buy it from specialty delis and chocolate stores. Whatever you buy though, Dutch or not, buy a good one that doesn’t have sugar and other additives; it tastes better, gives you a beautiful rich colour and a great result every time.
