10 foods that make you happy

There’s no denying that what we eat affects how we feel but did you know that certain foods can make us happy? Cool I know, and it all comes down to one weird little word – tryptophan ((trip-toe-fan: just in case you wanted to say it out loud). Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that’s converted into serotonin. Serotonin is well known as the body’s happy hormone – it makes us feel good.

Unfortunately our bodies aren’t capable of making tryptophan and so we need to rely on what we eat to get our happiness fix. With winter making itself front and centre, we could all do with a little happy mood food, right?

Fill up on these tryptophan-bursting foods to stave off those winter blues:

Turkey

Low in fat, turkey is a fantastic protein to include in your diet. Make a stir-fry with turkey meat and lots of bright coloured vegetables. It’ll make you happy just looking at it. Most recipes that you would use chicken or pork would be great for turkey.

High in omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin B, eating more tuna will have you glowing in no time.

High in omega 3s which are reputed to assist in collagen production. Who needs botox!

Fantastic source of lean protein, chicken is one of the most versatile ingredients you can have in your kitchen. Poach it, roast it, fry it, stirfry it, barbeque it…. Gorgeous!
